DJ Cheek, age 22, began studying viola in his native Greenville, SC. In May 2012 DJ received his BM from the Oberlin Conservatory, where he was a student of Peter Slowik. He has participated in festivals such as Yellow Barn and Sarasota in the United States, the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, the Prussia Cove Masterclasses in the UK, and the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. DJ has collaborated with the Borromeo Quartet and principal players from the Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, and Staatskapelle Dresden, and has studied chamber music with members of the Pacifica, Orion, Takács, and Parker Quartets. Twice he performed with Jamie Laredo’s New York String Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, and he played principal viola in the 2011 YouTube Symphony Orchestra in Sydney, Australia.
DJ is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree at the New England Conservatory as a student of Kim Kashkashian.
