Departure Duo is a Boston-based soprano and double bass duo comprised of Nina Guo and Edward Kass. Committed to expanding the repertoire for this “high-low” combination, Departure Duo commissions new works and breathes life into existing pieces written for this pairing. Recent premieres include works by Katherine Balch and Talia Amar.
Departure Duo’s long-term project, 30x’30, is to have 30 hours of soprano/double bass repertoire in existence by 2030, a goal to be achieved both through commissions and research.
Departure Duo has performed throughout the US in venues such as Jordan Hall (Boston), Spectrum NYC, Center for New Music (SF), and Art Share LA. Recently, Departure Duo has appeared at Omaha Under the Radar, Columbia University, Brandeis University, and was named a semi-finalist in the 2016 Concert Artists Guild Competition. Upcoming engagements include concerts at Clark University, residencies at University of Georgia and Yellow Barn (VT), and a debut at Spoleto Festival USA.
Nina and Edward are particularly interested in how extended technique, new methods of playing, and theatricality can expand the range of expression for musicians and further engage audiences. A Departure Duo concert showcases the incredible variety within the soprano/double bass universe. With some pieces coming from a more “classical” tradition, and others using experimental sounds and techniques, Departure Duo shows audiences the wide range of sounds and expressions possible from just soprano and double bass.
By celebrating the diversity found within this small (but growing!) corner of music, Departure Duo aims to counter new music’s notoriety and promote accessibility for all audiences.
