Rachel Yi, age 18, is a violinist currently studying at the New England Conservatory. She began private lessons at the age of 5 and has had the opportunities to study privately with and take part in masterclasses with many renowned artists, including Mihaela Martin, Nicholas Kitchen, Paul Kantor, Daniel Phillips, Hye-Jin Kim, Ara Gregorian, and many others. Rachel studied with Mr. Paul Biss during her first year at NEC and will be studying with Ms. Miriam Fried during the rest of her college years.
Rachel has won numerous competitions, including co-winner of the 2014 College of Charleston Young Artist Competition and MTNA state winner in 2013 and 2014. She also won second place of the 2015 Clemson University Concerto Competition and was a winner of the 2016 Young Artists Orchestra Concerto Competition. Rachel was recently awarded third place at the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition of 2017. She had the opportunity to perform with both orchestras. Rachel is the recipient of several scholarships including the Anthony Quinn Foundation, Fine Arts Foundation and GCYO.
In the past summers, Rachel participated in many music festivals, such as the Heifetz Institute of Music. Many of the festivals she attended were chamber music-intensive, some of them being Madeline Island Chamber Music, Heartland Chamber Music Festival, Music@Menlo, and the East Carolina University Summer Chamber Music Institute. The most recent festival she has attended was the Taos Chamber Music Festival this past summer 2019.
