Thirteen years ago, super violist Kim Kashkashian was one of the original founders of a program called Music for Food. The idea was that distinguished musicians would give free concerts that would also encourage the audience to donate money to feed the hungry.

“Bartók, Kodaly, and Kurtág all wrote music for children, music for pedagogical purposes,” said Pogossian. “They understood that music was for everyone. They didn’t draw false distinctions between highbrow and lowbrow music, and I want to pay homage to that too. It is a real pleasure to bring our very fine music education students up on stage to perform this wonderful music.” It is also noteworthy that Pogossian will donate all proceeds from the concert and CD sales to a cause that he—and his students—work for and hold dear: Music for Food.

Deeply touching things have happened when the MFF interns guide concerts at a food pantry. I was sitting at a table with a few of the WLP clients enjoying the performance, when I saw one of the women in tears. Afterwards she told me she had been a choral conductor. On another occasion one of the pantry clients wanted to sing with us, and she led us in a rousing few folk songs. These experiences remind us of the circular nature of energy and love. Who can define the line between giving and receiving?
Concert raises money for Newton Food Pantry, Community Freedge

A cacophony of violin strums and piano keys echoed in the halls of Newton's Allen House on a recent Saturday. Each note played was organized by Music for Food, raising over $1,000 to benefit the Newton Food Pantry and Newton Community Freedge.

Musicians performing on a stage, assuming a “heroic” status is only one way to experience and share in composed music. “I would postulate that, that pyramid structure has to be minimized, if not destroyed.” She emphasized the need for “give and take” between the audience and the musician.

For more than 4 years, talented musicians have volunteered their time to perform classical music in our community shelter.
